IBM is to buy database giant Informix for $1bn in the second biggest deal of its history after the acquisition of Lotus for $3bn in 1995.The deal, if approved, will make Big Blue overall market leader, taking into account its DB2 user base.
The company has dominated mainframe databases but the new deal will give it a bigger slice of the larger Unix and NT mid-range market, which Oracle commands with an estimated 52 per cent share.
IBM says it will support and update Informix's current products, although "selected technologies" would be integrated into DB2 applications.
