Cheap printers often turn expensive when you add in the upgrade options to make them workgroup-worthy. But here's a product that comes with everything included in its basic price, from duplexer to wireless networking port.

The ML-2152W is well featured for paper handling. A 500-sheet input cassette, complete with paper-level indicator, slots in flush with the front of the unit. A multipurpose tray above this supports another 100 sheets.

Printouts can be delivered face-down to the top output tray, or face-up to a hinged-panel output tray at the back. This can also act as a straight-path tray in conjunction with the multipurpose feeder.

The full list of ports includes USB2, parallel and 10/100BaseTX Ethernet, while the wireless antenna receives print jobs from any computer with an 802.11b adaptor, both directly or via a wireless hub. This works well, although setup seems drawn-out because of the need to install several software utilities one by one. The printer can be configured remotely from a web browser, or at the device itself using its navigation buttons and two-line backlit LCD status window. You can even toggle duplexing on and off with a single global override button on top of the machine.

Print quality is best at 600dpi, despite the availability of 1,200dpi which makes greys look grainy or murky. Print speed is best when using the USB2, wireless or Ethernet interfaces, achieving around 17ppm real-world performance for plain text output, compared with the official engine speed of 20ppm. Printing with the Postscript 3 emulation driver supplied is a bit slower. Given all the extras you get within the base price, the ML-2152W is great value.
