Microsoft issues one patch for September

'Critical' security patch on its way

Microsoft plans to release only one patch this Tuesday as part of its monthly cycle, the company said in a security advisory on its website.

The patch fixes a hole in Windows which Microsoft rates as 'critical', the most severe security ranking. The software maker also plans to release one non-security update for the operating system.

Microsoft released six patches last month, one of which was rated 'critical'. Worm authors crafted the Zotob worm within days and wreaked havoc on Windows 2000 computers across the internet.

The software giant's 'Patch Tuesday' traditionally coincides with the release of an updated version of its Malicious Software Removal Tool.

Microsoft plans to host a web conference on the day after the patch releases at 11am PDT (7pm GMT) to answer customer questions.
