Cebit 07: Samsung’s new monitors to link up via USB

Samsung is to launch a range of flat screen monitors that will link up via USB, to create desktop computers with a combined resolution of up to a whopping 9,600x1,200.

An alternative to fitting multiple graphics cards, each screen houses a flash drive running Samsung's UbiSync software.

Up to six UbiSync monitors can be daisy-chained over USB, giving users a resolution of 9,600x1,200 if they hook up the total possible number of 1,600x1,200 monitors.

Although final pricing is yet to be announced, Samsung is confident UbiSync will have little impact on the final cost.

“UbiSnyc offers a significant cost saving, with possibly just a €50 step up from a standard 19in screen,” said Ami Randhawa, Senior Product Marketing Manager for UK Displays.

Randha admitted it wasn’t aimed at the gaming market, but rather “B2B organisations with a key requirement for multiple displays such as finance centres and control rooms”.

UbiSync is based on technology developed by UK-based company Display Link . Exclusive to its monitors for 12 months, Samsung hopes to gain a foothold in the market before rival manufacturers start releasing similar screens.

Samsung’s 19in UbiSync screen launches in May, with a 20in version shipping in July.
