IBM has unveiled a revamped version of Lotus Expeditor designed to allow businesses to create mashup applications blending web services with enterprise data across multiple platforms.

The ability to create on-the-fly applications combining, for example, the content of a corporate database with a news feed and Google Maps, is vital for the productivity of mobile workers, according to Big Blue.

IBM Lotus Expeditor 6.1.1 is a managed client that can extend mashups in the enterprise to a variety of desktop, laptop and mobile devices.

It is designed to give customers access to business information, such as insurance and expense forms, inventory data and mobile customer relationship management embedded in web 2.0-style services.

The capability is built into Lotus Notes 8.0 and Domino 8.0, both of which were released last week.

Developers can use Expeditor to incorporate elements from disparate sources, including .Net, Swing, native, Eclipse-based components, Flash and components that have business processes contained in back-office applications.

Expeditor will also provide a destination for end-of-life Microsoft Visual Basic applications, according to IBM.
