Google hacks on the rise

Company data too easy to find

PCW Staff, Personal Computer World 23 May 2006

The number of companies that are being hacked because their data can be found on Google is increasing.

Backup files are the most susceptible followed by remote administration vulnerabilities.

The startling findings come after researchers working for Massey University in New Zealand wrote code that ran 170 queries a day for three months against the Google database, writes the Inquirer.

They concentrated on the websites of companies in New Zealand, Australia, the US and the Czech Republic, but found that sites across the world were becoming increasingly vulnerable every day.

Sites in New Zealand had the least protection from Google hackers. This included their own university website, where 50 vulnerabilities were discovered. These have since been closed.
