Analyst predicts 200 Dixons store closures

But group denies plan to cull PC World and Currys as online sales bite

Clive Akass, Personal Computer World 11 Jan 2008

More than 200 Currys and PC World stores could close as part of a restructure by the parent Dixons group, an analyst has claimed.

The prediction from Credit Suisse retail analyst Tony Shiret, reported by the trade magazine ERT, followed news that the group's full-year profits would be £50m below expectation.

He predicted that the UK would go the way of the US, where 25percent of electrical sales are made online. In Britain the figure in 11percent.

Dixons dismissed the claim as speculation. Its finance chief Kevin O'Byrne told ERT: "Stores will be core to retail for some time to come and we have no plane to close stores at the moment."
