Ubuntu 8.10 Desktop Edition

Complete and popular Linux distribution

Tim Smith, Computeract!ve 01 Nov 2008

Ubuntu Linux is a very popular distribution ideal for both newcomers and seasoned Linux fans. It is easy to set up and comes with all of the software you are likely to need, including the Openoffice suite.

Much of the software included with Ubuntu will be immediately familiar, such popular open source web browser Firefox. F-spot handles organising and editing digital photos and Rhythmbox is the default media player. Emails are read using the Evolution software; more like Microsoft Outlook than Mozilla Thunderbird it can also organise appointments and contacts.

Should you want any software that is not installed automatically during installation there is a very good Add Programs utility that downloads the latest versions automatically.

Ubuntu 8.10 Desktop Edition is a major release with a number of new features including 3G wireless support, temporary guest sessions on your computer and updates to the kernel, supplied software and more.
