Issue 210 of Computeractive magazine, published on 2 March, includes a guide to changing your ISP, whether you have a dial-up or broadband connection. Here are some links mentioned in the feature that you may find helpful.

Find a new ISP that's right for you with Active Services.

Moving to a new house and unsure whether broadband is available? Try BT's availability checker. Enter the post code or telephone number of the property - you'll have to scroll down the website to use this feature.

In order to move ISP, you'll need a MAC code. No ISP can refuse to issue one, as set out in the Ofcom code of practice.

One problem you may encounter when moving is having the wrong sort of MAC code - find out about the difference between IPStream and DataStream here.

Sadly, some people need to move ISP when their existing provider goes into liquidation - this can be tricky for people with hosted websites, but advice is available from Nominet.

For free webmail while moving your ISP, try Hotmail or Lycos.

If you have a comment to make about the feature, please email us at letters@computeractive.co.uk
