Over the past couple of years, the internet seems to have gone crazy for web
logs – or blogs, for short – with every individual and company worth their salt
setting up a blog to share their thoughts with the world.
Published in issue 218 of Computeractive is the first in a series of
workshops on building and managing an advanced website. It explores how to set
up a self-hosted blog, driven by a database for maximum flexibility. More
specifically, it examines MySQL databases used in conjunction with a system
called WordPress.
Aside from the cost of the domain name and hosting package, WordPress is
completely free of charge and includes powerful features not found in many
simpler blogging services. However, it is necessary to ensure that your chosen
hosting package has certain features, including PHP and MySQL databases.
There are a number of suitable hosts to choose from, and several are listed
on the
WordPress
website.
