Online multiplayer gaming adds a new dimension to most computer games, and now you don't need a PC to try it.
Xbox Live is an online add-on for Microsoft's Xbox console and, at £40, is about the same price as an Xbox game.
In the box is a simple microphone headset, a cartridge that plugs into an Xbox controller (to which the headset connects) and a set-up disc.
Your Xbox needs to be connected either directly to a broadband cable modem or via a router. The network cable needed for this isn't supplied and the service only works with a broadband service.
Getting online with the disc is a straightforward job, after which you can play the two bundled online games - Moto GP and Whacked.
The headset lets you talk to other players in real time but, although novel, this can become distracting.
Finally, your £40 gets you 12 months of playing; after that, you'll need to cough up another 12 months. It seems a bit gimmicky but it indicates that online gaming isn't just for PC owners anymore.
