If you don't have 5.1 surround-sound speakers on your PC, DVD movies can sound rather flat. The obvious remedy is to invest in a new set, but they're not cheap.
An alternative is the reasonably priced Zalman 5.1 Surround Sound Headphones. This huge piece of headgear connects to the three audio outputs of a 5.1 sound card, allowing the headphones to receive three separate channels of sound (front, rear and centre), which are pumped through three speakers within each earpiece.
While this sounds a simple idea, we were quite cynical about how it would work in practice. However, the results were excellent and we could really hear audio effects darting around from every location. The general audio quality is very good and what's more you needn't worry about disturbing others if you decide to crank up the volume.
They come with a three metre cord, so you can sit back from your PC when using them. They also fold up when not in use.
The only minor criticism is the lack of colour-coded plugs. They are labelled front, rear and centre but if you're not sure what these relate to, you'll have to dig out your sound card manual.
