The Apple Mac operating system already allows you to create your own CDs and DVDs, but Roxio's Toast and Jam programs provide more sophisticated features that have made them extremely popular with Mac users. You can buy Toast by itself for about £70, but Jam includes lots of extras.
It allows you to quickly remove hissing or scratching noises from old vinyl recordings, and create your own mixes and music compilations. Clicking the Crossfade button opens a new window where you can fine-tune the crossfade effect with great precision before burning the music onto CD.
This version of Jam also allows you to copy music tracks onto DVD and add on-screen menus and slideshows. Jam supports the Dolby Digital compression format, so you can get several hours worth of music onto a single DVD.
It's pricey, but its features make Toast with Jam a must-have item for Mac-owning musos.
