If the threat of viruses is keeping you off the internet, protecting yourself with some good software is the answer and McAfee is a name that has been around for some time.
After a quick installation, VirusScan Professional immediately starts keeping your PC safe. It will automatically check for software updates from the internet every five minutes and allows you to schedule regular scans of your hard disk for potential nasties. Checking for viruses is reasonably fast and, more importantly, won't cripple your PC's performance while it's working.
If you are ever unsure about virus warnings attached to emails, VirusScan has a link to the McAfee website, which contains information about viruses and hoaxes in circulation. A recent example is the JDBGMGR.EXE email hoax, which carries a warning to delete the file even though it is quite harmless. If you do receive emails like this, you can check the website to see if it's a real threat.
You will find some other useful security utilities that will help to protect your computer. QuickClean scans your hard disk for files that are no longer needed, deleting them to free space and boost performance. Shredder will permanently delete files so they can never be recovered and should be used with care. The McAfee Security Centre gives you advice on how to protect your computer, although most recommendations are how to buy other McAfee products.
It is also worth noting that this product contains two licences for VirusScan Professional so you can legally install it on two computers. Free updates for a year are also included, and after that it's £35 per year.
