Most people will already own DVD-playing software, which will have come bundled either with their computer or a DVD drive.
Although Windows Media Player won't play DVDs without a player such as WinDVD installed, they can be played through other software like RealPlayer, which can be downloaded for free. So why would anyone choose to pay for DVD-playing software?
WinDVD does have extra features that the free players lack: it promises better colour balance and picture quality, as well as advanced pan and zooming features (good for viewing wide-screen discs on small screens).
It also provides smoother playback, and offers support for the surround-sound formats Dolby Digital 5.1 and Dolby ProLogic II. In addition, it will act as a media player for Real, QuickTime and Windows Media format video files.
Playback is better than on most free players, and the navigation and menu system are good, but the quality still doesn't compare to a good standalone player (although WinDVD does offer a TV-output mode).
All in all, it's hard to recommend unless you're a true fan of watching DVDs on your PC. If not, a free player is better value.
