The ability to access your PC when you're away from your desk is more useful than you might think. It means not having to remember to copy files to a USB key, for example, or upload them to an online file storage service.
MyWebExPC is different from the GoToMyPC software that we've previously reviewed in that it's completely free. A broadband connection is recommended and the PC you want to access must be left on.
To access a PC, some special software must be installed. This can be downloaded from the WebEx site as part of the registration process, which only requires a name and an email address. This software can be installed on up to five computers.
Remote access must be from a computer using Windows and either Internet Explorer or Mozilla Firefox. All information is scrambled between the PCs to ensure security.
It's not possible to transfer files between the two PCs, although you can open and view or even email them to yourself.
You can restrict access through MyWebExPC to specific programs such as an email application or Word, but it's hard to think of why this would be useful if the person accessing them over the internet is already trusted that much.
