Seagate boosts drive capacity
Hard disk maker Seagate has detailed 12 new products that it expects to
launch later this year, including 500GB capacity Serial ATA (Sata) mechanisms,
bringing it in line with most of its competitors.
The advances will let vendors such as EMC and StorageTek double the capacity
of their Sata-based drive arrays, bringing entry-level configurations up to
about 8TB.
Seagate also announced a new version of its Momentus 5400 drive for laptops,
which encrypts data stored on the drive. The feature is primarily intended to
keep data private if a laptop is lost or stolen.
