Giants develop joint Wap pilot scheme

Network IT Week 13 Sep 2000Vodafone and Microsoft are to develop a service that will give access to e-mail and intranet services via Wap devices.
The pilot scheme, similar to one launched by BT Cellnet last October, will offer participants access to Outlook email, to Exchange calendar and contacts, and intranet content on its Mobile Explorer platform.
Paul Tomlin, technical director of web service specialist Life01, said that the technology itself was not so much the problem as the limitations of the devices.
"Services that are suitable for Wap, like linking to intranets, aren't exactly showstoppers. We've experimented with developing these services for clients but they never got off the ground," he said.
A Vodafone spokeswoman confirmed that the service is likely to be the first available on its GPRS high-speed mobile data service, when it launches at the end of the year.
