Largest European cable project for MoD

The Ministry of Defence (MoD) is installing a structured cabling system throughout its main Whitehall and Decant buildings, in what is believed to be the largest cabling project in Europe.

Networking company Pinacl Communication Systems is designing and installing the cabling infrastructure, which includes conventional copper and blown fibre to enable the government to follow through its internet strategy.

John Oliver, marketing director of Pinacl, said the MoD cabling system is one of the UK's largest ever public sector refurbishment projects.

"One benefit of blown fibre over copper is that any damage is easier to repair. Multi-mode fibre is used for networks but single-mode is creeping into the building. Blown fibre enables higher bandwidth and is tamper-proof. The cabling will be 80 per cent fibre as Whitehall thought a hybrid solution was best," he said.

"Fibre is more expensive than copper technology, but it will cope with the demands of ecommerce faster and more securely."
