Digital subscriber line (DSL) could be finished before it has even begun, according to Pinacl which claims it can deploy a 100Mbps connection through ethernet access.

Pinacl Communication Systems has announced the launch of its yet to be branded ethernet technology, which it says can enable carriers and multiple service operators to offer high speed IP services to residential and business users.

Niall MacFadyen, head of telecoms at Pinacl, said the new technology is up to 80 per cent more efficient and cost effective than asymmetric DSL (ADSL), and can deliver bandwidth of 40 times faster. It will utilise one pipe for voice, data and video.

MacFadyen added that ADSL technology is designed to solve the problem of bandwidth but that ethernet is a simpler technology which is easier to deploy and cheaper than fibre.

"It is relevant to the new generation of multi-service operators [and] any service provider will need it," he said. "Cable television companies will use it for video on demand services as there is less 'jitter' with 100Mbps. ADSL has limited potential."

He claimed that the speed in the local loop was not an issue and that Pinacl's core technology could handle it. To prevent bottlenecks on the internet, the company stores data at local exchange level and analyses local storage on content.

"We will prioritise packets over IP with Level 3 switching. We are expecting take up in the US first as there is an established market there. The UK is very behind in unbundling the local loop and we expect the take-up here to be in two or three years. The UK will have to build a new network to cope with bandwidth demands," said MacFadyen.
