Impressive hardware that's let down by expensive associated charges.

The e-m@iler plus is Amstrad's second attempt to bring email to the non-computer literate masses.

Just like its previous incarnation, you can put it anywhere in your home or office, provided a phone point and mains socket are nearby.

You're then equipped with eight email addresses, a Wap and web browser (Microsoft Mobile Internet Explorer), SMS-to-mobile phone feature, an e-card facility and fax. You can also download and play ZX Spectrum games.

The hardware itself incorporates a digital answering machine and a handset for making standard voice calls.

A more robust and removeable keyboard that slots into the unit's front supplements the tiny Qwerty keyboard that sits on top of the device. The screen is clear and bright, while USB and parallel ports allow for the attachment of a choice of peripherals, such as a printer.

The device's biggest failing is the charges associated with ongoing use. For example, downloading ZX Spectrum games is charged and time-limited (50p for three days).

Surfing the web or accessing Wap sites costs 12p per session, plus local call charges. Collecting email costs 12p per session, ditto for sending text messages.

The e-m@iler plus is a clever idea and the hardware is impressive, but it's an expensive device and you'll soon outgrow its functionality.
