Unlike many manufacturers who just use ATI's reference design, Tyan uses its expertise to take the basics and add more, and unique, features to its graphics cards.
Born out of ATI's need to produce a relatively inexpensive DirectX 9 card for the mainstream market, the Radeon 9600 Pro has a much-reduced feature set compared to the Radeon 9500 Pro.
With only four pixel pipelines, the 0.13-micron core features just 60 million transistors, compared with the R300 family's 110 million. To compensate for the reduced pixel pipelines, the clock speed is ramped up to 400MHz and uses 128MB of 300MHz DDR (600MHz) memory.
Tyan's Tachyon G9600 Pro uses a slightly longer PCB than the reference design in order to fit in its extra features and re-worked power circuitry.
Tyan has added a buzzer to the card and integrated a Winbond hardware-monitoring chip, making the G9600 Pro the only Radeon 9600 Pro card to feature built-in hardware monitoring.
Replacing the small cooling fan of the original card is a huge, two-piece heatsink - a touch of overkill as the original Radeon 9600 never gets that hot, but at least it looks more impressive than the original. Fitted with a 6,000rpm fan (the speed can be altered via Tyan's Graphics Monitor), it cools the GPU and memory on the top of the board as well as the memory chips on the rear of the card.
