New core for frugal chips

Microarchitecture boosts performance by 40 percent using 40 percent less power

A new processor core microarchitecture will increase performance by 40 per cent, while reducing power drain by 40 per cent compared with today’s Pentium D 950, Intel said.

This will lead to dual- and quad-core processors ‘that we expect to deliver industry-leading performance and capabilities per watt’, chief technology officer Justin Rattner told the Intel Developer Forum (IDF).

The gains will be achieved by doing more work per clock cycle, powering down logic that is not being used, and more intelligent use of cache memory and Ram. See here for processor roadmap.
