Patrick Wilmore has a problem with space: he has too much and he wants to get
rid of it. He has two tables in an Access database that come from different
sources and both have a text field for holding numeric ID codes.
Unfortunately, the data from one source is entered in the form ‘123 456 7890’
and the other is entered as ‘1234567890’.
Patrick wants to convert the data by removing spaces from the strings held in
the first format so all IDs are stored in the second, spaceless format.
Welcome to the wonderful world of text handling. Access has a range of text
functions for manipulating a string of characters which will allow you to do
almost anything.
We’ll use the text functions in expressions in a query, so open a new query
grid and add the IDTable. This table is a simple soul comprising one column with
the spaced strings.
You can download the table and the associated queries from
here.
