Q I use Word 2003 under XP. For some time the folder of
Document files available to use in Word has been shown by ‘Modified’, that is,
date order, though the same folder is shown in Windows Explorer in alphabetical
order. I can’t persuade the system to show me files in alphabetical order using
the File, Open command from Word.

A Word doesn’t use the built-in Windows File Open/Save
dialogues, so the views specified in Explorer won’t apply.
The principle, however, is the same. Click once on a heading to sort by that
category, click again to reverse the order.
This preference should then ‘stick’ next time you visit that folder from the
Open or Save dialogues.
