LG's latest LCD is a 23in beauty that comes complete with a separate Media Centre box. All inputs and outputs are routed through this hub, and the unit can convert DVD and HDTV (High-Definition TV) signals to a VGA or DVI output. LG also provides a remote control that lets you use the OSM (on-screen menu) as well as basic televisual controls
While this kind of flexibility is welcome, it does seem a shame that these features could not have been incorporated into the monitor itself.
The media box is quite a chunky device to have sitting next to something that looks this good.
The display itself is superb. It has a native resolution of 1,920 x 1,200 on analogue VGA, while the DVI output peaks at 1,280 x 1,024. In terms of quality it's crystal clear on text, but DVD and gaming is where it really shines - you never appreciate how much a large widescreen helps until you use it. LG claims the viewing angle is an ambitious 176 degrees, and the reality is not that far off. However, it's not the best-quality screen that we've seen; even this month, the Iiyama beats it, and that costs less than half the price (although it is 4in smaller).
The OSM is pretty simple to use, whether you go via the remote or the easy controls on the monitor itself. All the relevant options are laid out in a simple manner.
The real issue here is the astronomical price - very few people should fork out £2,400 for just 23in when you can get a monstrous widescreen telly with all the trimmings for the same money. However, there's no denying it's a very desirable screen and could appeal to those who need a flexible monitor-cum-TV.
