This Asus card is the second we've seen to use ATI's new Radeon 9800 XT chip. It has exactly the same specifications as the Hercules card.
Where Asus has differed from Hercules is in the design, as it closely resembles the reference design from ATI. A large heatsink covers it and two externally powered fans keep it cool. However, Asus uses its Smart Cooling technology to adjust the speed of the fans depending on the temperature of the card. It helps keep noise down when it isn?t being worked too hard.
The software you get includes Videosecurity, Media Show, and Ulead Photo Express SE 4.
As expected, the performance of the card was impressive. In 3Dmark 2003 it scored 6,474 running at 1,024 x 768, and 18,603 in 3Dmark 2001. Upping the resolution to 1,600 x 1,200 with four-times anti-aliasing gave us a respectable score of 3,463 in 3Dmark 2003.
It blasted through Unreal Tournament, giving us 82.71fps running at 1,024 x 768. Upping the resolution to 1,600 x 1,200 with four-times anti-aliasing barely dented its performance, as it still ran at 61.96fps.
This is a very fast card with a decent bundle of software. But, like the Hercules, it's expensive and not light-years ahead of some of the cards in our mini round-up. You're probably better off looking at the last generation of cards and saving some money.
