The M3000 is Plantronics' flagship Bluetooth consumer headset. Finished in silver and clad with nothing more than a small logo, the M3000 is as useful as it is mysterious.
We tested the M3000 with a Nokia 3650 mobile phone, although it is compatible with most Bluetooth devices with headset or hands-free profiles. Putting the device into a programmable mode and achieving a link with the phone was smooth and painless. Once connected, all phone noises (including key tones) are diverted from the device's speaker through a Bluetooth connection into the M3000.
In practice, using the M3000 can be as disconcerting as it is practical. Technically speaking the device works well, relaying conversations clearly thanks to decent in-ear speakers and a noise-cancelling microphone. However, due to its sheer size and unconventional design, we couldn't help but feel slightly awkward. Once the initial feeling of being a little too conspicuous dies down however, the M3000 is a pleasure to use.
It is intended to fit most ears, although we did find extended use could prove slightly uncomfortable. With a claimed eight-hour battery life, the M3000 is intended for good performance. Thanks to its 10m range, the device can also be used in one room even if your phone is in another. The M3000 boasts adjustable volume controls and a mute function, although most users will find the one-touch last number redial and voice-activated calling features more useful. On the whole this is an excellent product which only struggles in windy situations.
Bearable in size and weight, the M3000 is very effective for its intended purpose. However, at nearly £150, it's expensive and could be more than the mobile you are using it with.
