Notebook PCs are becoming more viable for people who would traditionally have bought a desktop system. Prices are now within reach of most buyers and having a notebook doesn't mean less power or flexibility.

ACI's Sovereign Pro is a good example of a desktop replacement notebook. It features a desktop Intel Pentium 4 processor running at 2.8GHz and 512MB of 333MHz Ram. Allied to a 60GB hard disk and sporting a graphics chipset based on ATI's Mobility Radeon 9600 with 128MB of dedicated memory, this is quite desirable on paper.

Off paper, things aren't quite so impressive. While we accept the silver and blue plastic case may be attractive to some, the 4kg bulk is less likely to be. However, if it sits on a desk, the weight isn't so important. The keyboard is large and pretty much full size, although it is a little bouncy. The trackpad is also large but a proper mouse is still a must. The integrated floppy disk drive is a waste of space but the combo CD-RW/DVD-Rom provides a more practical option. The 15in screen operates at a native resolution of 1,400 x 1,050 and is excellent. The ACI is also well served with connection options, as there are four USB2 ports, a single mini-Firewire and a Type II PC Card socket. An integrated Wifi adaptor complements the network port.

All told, the ACI has plenty to recommend it if you want to replace a desktop with a powerful portable. But it's not a pretty computer and it's not cheap.
