Pros:
Superb skin tones; excellent detail; loads of manual features; 28mm wide angle.

Cons:
Only 4x zoom; some photos require contrast adjustment; pricey.

As the most expensive model here, you'd justifiably expect great quality pictures and the Nikon doesn't disappoint.

The array of dials, buttons and other controls on the Coolpix 5400 gives the impression this is a serious digital camera. It might not sport the 10x zoom lens boasted by others in this group test, but its 4x optical zoom Nikkor lens is actually capable of something no others in this group test can match - a stunning 28mm wide-angle equivalent.

You can see the difference this makes by taking a look at the zoom test shots on the cover disc - notice how when in wide-angle mode the Nikon manages to include objects the other cameras completely miss.

The flip-and-twist LCD adds that little bit of versatility to the Coolpix 5400, although some may find it a little tricky to get the hang of the controls and menu system. In terms of price, the Coolpix 5400 only just made it into this group test at £599.99. In fact, had we performed this group test last month it wouldn't have been included at all since the price has just been reduced from £649.99.

So what about the quality? Well, in our opinion, the Coolpix 5400 completely stole the show, especially when it came to replicating skin tones. When we examined our 12 separate test shots there was very little doubt in our mind that the Coolpix 5400 was top dog. It might not have been quite as striking as the Kodak, but the sheer level of detail was superb, which also gives you greater power to tweak your shots in an image editor such as Adobe Photoshop.

The only area where the Nikon really drops points is when it comes to the zoom. Starting from such a wide angle means the 4x zoom can only muster the equivalent of a 116mm telephoto lens.

If you want a camera that's going to deliver quality images and don't mind paying nearly £600, the Nikon Coolpix certainly won't disappoint.
