While the piano keyboard is a natural Midi input device, mainly due to its inherently digital on/off nature, early attempts at transforming the analogue output of a guitar into playing instructions have been either dodgy or expensive.
The affordable GR-20GK not only Midi-enables virtually any steel-stringed guitar, it has foot-pedal controls and a built-in synthesiser that you can use live on stage. It can be used as a Midi input for computer-based music software (see Sibelius G7 Kontakt review). A guitar is, in one respect, better than basic keyboard input, in that it allows you to bend notes.
The package includes a GK-3 pick-up, which can slot into most thumbwheel-adjustable bridges; otherwise you have to screw it on. It is well worth the trouble, because it transforms the guitar into an exhilarating new instrument.
