Combining a flatbed scanner and printer in a single device, the Epson Stylus CX6600 aims to take care of all your copying, printing and scanning needs.

The top of the unit lifts to expose an A4 flatbed scanner, which scans at a maximum resolution of 1,200 x 2,400ppi (pixels per inch), and features detachable hinges to accommodate thicker pages.

In turn, the scanner lifts to expose the cartridge bed. The Epson takes four separate cartridges, so you can run each colour down before replacing. The USB socket is also located in here.

The paper input tray holds up to 150 sheets of plain paper and printouts emerge into the paper output tray at the front of the unit. An extendable support is provided to catch them.

All the controls are arranged on the front panel of the unit around an LED screen with a button at each corner to allow you to make selections from the options displayed.

There are also four mode buttons so you can quickly switch between set-up, copying, scanning and card printing modes. The last of these lets you print images directly from a digital camera memory card and you also have the option of saving scans directly to a card.

Print speeds were pretty disappointing overall. The CX6600 churned out our test text document at a sluggish rate of 5ppm (pages per minute) and our test pdf and mixed content documents at 3ppm. Meanwhile, our test A4 photo took a full minute to print.

Print quality was excellent, though. Text was legible right down to 2point and images were sharply reproduced with no evidence of banding in areas of solid colour.

With a price tag of just £149, the Epson is a great choice for the home office if print speeds are not paramount.
