Lexmark’s latest entry in the world of multifunction devices (MFDs) is the P6350. It’s a good-looking model and features an LCD screen on the front panel offering step-by-step instructions for printing, scanning and copying.
As well as providing instructions on how to change cartridges when the lid is opened, the screen also lets you perform simple editing tasks on photos before printing, such as red-eye correction and cropping.
A card reader sits under a flap on the front panel and allows direct printing from your digital camera’s memory card. As this is a Pictbridge printer, you can print directly from Pictbridge digicams via a USB cable.
Print quality is good and will suit most home users, but it’s nothing like the output produced by a high-end dedicated photo printer. Colours are vibrant and true to life, but slight speckling was visible. Text printing is impressive, with sharp edges and readable text down to 4pt.
The P6350 comes with two cartridges as standard, photo and colour, but no black ink cartridge is included. As a result, text printing is painfully slow – our tests recorded it at 1.2ppm (pages per minute). If you purchase a black ink cartridge (around £15), you’ll be able increase this to around 20ppm.
In high-quality mode, our A4 photo took six minutes, 19 seconds to print. Scanning performance was better: taking 20 seconds at 150dpi and 40 seconds at 300dpi, we were impressed with the quality of scans.
The P6350 is a reasonable performer with good-quality prints for an MFD, but if you want fast text output you’ll need to purchase the black ink cartridge. The RRP is £149, but we found it on PCW Best Prices for £95, although it’s still more expensive than we’d like.
