The V6X00J is Asus's first attempt at using Intel's Core Duo processor. The model powering this notebook is the T2400, which has a clock speed of 1.83GHz.
As noted with other Core Duo notebooks, system performance gets a real boost. The V6X00J scored a nippy 215 in Sysmark 2004SE and an impressive 3,769 in PCmark05.
The 1GB of DDR2 Ram helped the Asus achieve these impressive results.
The Centrino and Core Duo platforms have also proved their worth in terms of battery life, staying alive for an average of three hours, 18 minutes, which is excellent for a notebook of this size and weight.
Speaking of which, the V6X00J weighs 2.55kg, has a 15in SXGA+ screen and slim-line DVD-writer.
At its native resolution (1,400 x 1,050) it managed to score 1,348 in 3Dmark05 and 28fps (frames per second) in Far Cry.
When dropped to 1,024 x 668, the frame rate jumped up 12 notches, while 3DMark05 performance puffed up to 1,943.
In all, it's what we expected of the Nvidia Geforce Go 7400 graphics and we wouldn't recommend this notebook to gamers.
A 100GB hard disk is woven into the classy yet solid, business-like chassis. You also get the usual wireless networking options. Dotted around the case are four USB2 sockets, a mini Firewire, S/PDIF out and a memory card reader.
The keyboard and trackpad are well designed and various shortcut buttons are sculpted into a rubber strip under the display.
If we had one moan, it would refer to the screen, which feels a lot less robust than the rest of the notebook.
In its favour, the screen is very slim and we're yet to see such a display that bucks this trend.
It runs Window XP Professional and comes with a free carry bag and mouse. Asus is also bundling a two year collect and return warranty and a 'Zero Bright Dot' policy, which means a free panel replacement if any single bright dead pixel is found within 30 days of purchase.
It's not one for gamers, but the V6X00J has solid system performance and is reasonably portable.
