Verdict

Pros: Easy to set up; small; light
Cons: Capacity too small for some
Overall: The Maxtor OneTouch III Mini Edition is easy to set up and good for anyone who needs a portable backup drive, but the capacity is too small for those who want to back up large PC hard disks

Maxtor has built a reputation for producing easy to use external hard disk drives either for your desktop or to carry around.

Its latest is the Maxtor Onetouch III Mini Edition, a 5,400rpm 2.5in hard disk in a solid metallic casing that comes with capacities of either 60GB or 100GB.

The casing is small enough to comfortably slip into a pocket, and it weighs only 205g.

For a hard disk drive, it looks quite sleek, and comes with rounded, rubberised edges for extra protection, and to give it more grip when on a surface.

Setup is very easy. All the software is preinstalled on the hard disk, so it's simply a matter of plugging it into your computer via the USB port, and letting it go through its setup routine.

The Onetouch sets out to make all aspects of backup – never an exciting task – extremely easy, either through the single button on the unit itself, or the software icons, which are clearly labelled.

Backups can be automatically scheduled at set times on set days, plus they can be performed using the one button backup function. You can choose which files and programs are backed up.

Our 100GB review took about seven minutes to back up 3GB of data.

The drive can also be set to automatically create system restore points every four hours if you wish (this can be altered in four-hour blocks), which can then be used to repair a PC should it have a fatal Windows error.

Maxtor, which is being bought by rival Seagate, is aiming the Onetouch III Mini Edition at businesses, student and high-end consumers - anyone who has important information to protect, or needs to work regularly on files from different machines.

One neat touch is the Sync feature. If you work on a document on a second PC, the next time you plug the drive into your main computer, it will warn you that the document has been changed since it was last opened, and ask which version you want.

It can save up to 10 historical backups, each of which is appended so that only new changes are saved. It also includes security software to protect your files, although this works only on Windows, not Mac or Linux machines.
