The Apple Mighty Mouse now comes in a wireless form and not much has changed save for the omission of the USB connection wire.
As you’d expect from Apple it’s a stylish and well-designed mouse. All the functionality of the Mighty Mouse has been retained: touch-sensitive left and right clicking, 360-degree scrolling via the scroll ball and squeezable sides.
A Bluetooth connection is used to communicate with your Mac. It can control your base system from up to 30 feet away. No dongle is supplied but since Apple has equipped most of its desktop and notebook consumer line with Bluetooth capabilities, there’s no need for one.
The mouse’s movement is laser based and to save power it can be switched off via a slide which also cleverly covers up the laser, preventing it from gathering dust when not in use.
If you’re buying this mouse to replace a broken one, beware as it needs to be configured prior to use and this would be tricky unless you’re proficient with OS X keyboard shortcuts.
Configuration is relatively easy, requiring you to install software from CD and then simply ‘Bluetooth pairing’ the mouse and your Mac.
The mouse was responsive but is decidedly heavier than the wired version. If you spend a lot of time with your Mac, this could be an issue. The extra weight comes from the two AA batteries which power the wireless Mighty Mouse.
It will, however, operate quite happily with just one battery in place. This reduces the weight but leaves open the possibility of running out of power at an inconvenient time.
This mouse doesn’t come cheap and for those who already have a Mighty Mouse it’s really not worth upgrading. Those who might consider it are MacBook users who don’t already have an external mouse.
