Just weeks after techies cracked how to run
Windows
on an Intel-based Mac, Apple has launched free software that allowsthe
machines to run XP.
A public beta of the software, called
Boot
Camp, is now available, and it can turn an
Imac into a dual-boot system –
provided, you have a copy of Windows XP to load onto the machine.
It is not a virtual machine, so that you have to reboot to switch operating
systems.
Boot Camp will be a feature in 'Leopard', the next major release of Mac OSX,
which will be previewed at Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference in August.
'Apple has no desire or plan to sell or support Windows, but many customers
have expressed their interest to run Windows on Apple’s superior hardware now
that we use Intel processors,' said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice
president of Worldwide Product Marketing.
'We think Boot Camp makes the Mac even more appealing to Windows users
considering making the switch.'
Boot Camp provides a graphical wizard to help to partition your hard drive
for Windows and burn a CD with all the necessary Windows drivers.
