Staff sacrifice coffee breaks for web

But they fear losing jobs if they stray into web's murkier regions, says report

One in two employees would sacrifice their morning coffee rather than give up their daily web surf at their desks.

The finding is one of the more light-hearted results from the seventh annual Web@Work study by security firm Websense, which surveyed 351 IT managers and 500 employees.

Two in three staff spent a quarter of their web time each week surfing non-work related sites. The average access time per week came out at almost 13 hours, with over three hours of that being wasted by each respondent.

Interestingly, while surveyed employees claimed they surfed non-work related sites for just over three hours a week, IT managers put the figure at closer to six hours.

That said, employees are more aware of the dangers the Net can pose to their jobs. Almost half thought that visiting porn sites would get them the sack while a further 30 per cent said that they would be fired if they infected the company with malicious spyware or a virus.

Surprisingly, 92 per cent of employees believed that their employers have the right to install Web filtering technology to manage Web site access.

The top non-work related sites accessed were map sites (83 per cent), news sites (80 per cent) and weather sites (76 per cent).
