Copy protection will be cracked again, warns Microsoft

Rapid patchwork as BSkyB suspends video download service after security breach

Microsoft is still working to block a hole in its digital-rights management (DRM) software that has caused the suspension of at least one video-download service – and warns that it could happen again.

BSkyB suspended downloads of movies and sports clips after the release of a utility called Free Use4WM that would allow users to copy movies. It says they will be resumed after Microsoft patches the software.

Microsoft senior product manager Marcus Matthias said the company had always said no DRM system is impervious, and that its customers were well aware of the fact.

The Windows Media system used by BSkyB was designed to be ‘renewable’ so that if breaches occurred they could be addressed.

Matthias said: "We are working on an update and have alerted our content provider customers. When ready, we will work with our content partners to deploy this solution."

BT is about to launch a download service called BT Vision which will also use Microsoft DRM software.
