Apple 'swings both ways' on HD

Shock for Blu-ray as first high definition players hit UK high streets

Apple plans to support both the rival high-definition formats after appearing to support Blu-ray, according to a US website.

The Blu-ray camp claimed a victory last year when Apple joined the Blu-ray Association. But the Think Secret site claims to have seen documents indicating that it will offer equal support for HD-DVD.

Hewlett-Packard already supports both formats but most hardware companies so far have picked one or another.

The news came as Samsung launched the first Blu-ray player into UK high streets for £999; Panasonic is about to launch one for £1,299. The first HD-DVD player to be available in the UK is expected to launch in November for around £500.

LG Electronics has said it is developing a player supporting both technologies. And London-based NME has unveiled a £199 player using a third HD format based on existing DVD technology and targeted at the Bollywood and China markets.
