Fujitsu-Siemens
has launched a very small Tablet PC weighing less than 1kg – but not conforming
to Microsoft's ultra-mobile PC (UMPC) Origami spec.
The Lifebook P1610 has an 8.9in screen, compared with a 7in on the
first-generation Origamis. The screen twists round to reveal a keyboard,
allowing it to be used as a conventional notebook.
It offers Bluetooth and Wifi links, with optional embedded UMTS 3G
connectivity, and uses an ultra-low-voltage 1.2GHz Core Solo processor with up
to 1GB of Ram.
Some protoype Origamis have been shown with keyboards but Microsoft
recommends a 7in or 5in screen.
The P1610 weighs in at 1kg only if it has a three-cell battery; with a six
cell, the weight goes up to 1.2kg – twice the weight of the smallest Origami.
It runs XP Tablet PC 2005 edition but is described as Vista ready. Prices for
a UMTS-enabled model start at £1,389 ex Vat.
