The Swedish government has announced plans to create a virtual embassy in
online game
Second
Life.
It may sound like a joke but it is not, with Sweden becoming the first
country to set up a virtual embassy in Second Life, an online virtual game with
three million inhabitants. Unlike other online games, Second Life is more like a
social experiment that mirrors real-life.
It is already a popular location for
live
shows, retail
outlets, product launches and real-estate deals. One analyst, however, has
alleged that the site is nothing more than a
‘pyramid
scheme’.
The virtual Swedish embassy will have full support from the government. The
project will be overseen by the country's foreign ministry, which hopes to
promote travel and tourism in Sweden.
Ironically, the decision to go virtual comes just days after Sweden announced
plans to shut down two real embassies in Africa, due to financial constraints.
