Michael Dell is to retake the reins at his troubled PC company following the
removal of Kevin Rollins as CEO.
There have been calls in the past year for Rollins’ head, as
Dell’s
fortunes have slumped on the global market. Rollins took over as CEO in 2004
after some years as president and chief operating officer.
Under his tenure at the top, Dell has managed to
lose
its number one spot in the PC charts to HP, as well as turn in a string of
underwhelming
financial results. The company is also under investigation in the US for
alleged accounting irregularities in previous years that could result in a
damaging restatement of results.
Rollins has also stepped down from the company’s board of directors. Michael
Dell has been acting as chairman since 2004 and will continue to do so,
alongside his role as CEO.
“We've always been a company able to respond to challenges and
opportunities,” Dell commented on his return to the helm. “I'm very excited to
be CEO again. I feel the same kind of energy and drive I did when we started the
company in 1984.”
“Kevin has been a great business partner and friend,” he added. “He has made
significant contributions to our business over the past 10 years. I wish him
much success in the future.”
