AMD today launched two new low-drain single-core Athlon 64 processors and a
high-performance dual-core Athlon 64 X2.
The energy efficient 3500+ and 3800+ are said to use 45W, which is presumably
the Thermal Design Power (TDP) – the maximum power use the system using it
should be designed to cope with. We are checking this with AMD.
The dual-core 6000+ Athlon 64 X2 confirms AMD as “a leading-edge provider of
technology that offers end-users the performance they seek, while delivering
[an] unwavering level of quality,” according to Bob Brewer, vice president of
the company’s desktop division.
He expected companies and end users to be “pleased with both the low noise
and small form-factor designs” made possible by the new low-drain chips.
They are made on a 65nanometre process, which means more can be packed on the
300mm wafers on which they are made, making each potentially cheaper as well as
less power hungry.
Power consumption is becoming an increasing concern on desktops, and
particularly servers, as well as notebooks.
AMD has been facing increased competition on this score from Intel’s new
energy-efficient Core architecture, after a period in which it could claim the
technological edge in many areas.
It says the new chips will be available immediately, and in systems from
Alienware, Fujitsu Siemens Computers, Systemax and Voodoo.
