A new website called Izimi has launched that allows you to upload any kind of
file for sharing with the world.
Files are hosted on your PC and made visible on
Izimi's
website. Uploads are peer to peer and the host needs a free piece of
software, which is currently limited to Windows operating systems, to share
files.
Described as a social networking site, the website looks a bit like YouTube
with users' hosted files appearing as links or thumbnails on the website.
Izimi admits there are security concerns since a user's PC is transformed
into a server. It recommends a firewall and antivirus software since uploaded
files aren't virus scanned by the website.
Additionally files can't currently be made private, although there are plans
to do so.
Izimi claims there will be no restrictions on file type, size or quality and
says registered users get their own profile plus community features including
comments, rating, adding friends, adding favourites and messaging.
An Izimi spokesperson told PCW there are no restrictions on content, except
for illegal content including copyright infringement, and he would neither
confirm nor deny that users will be able to upload pornography.
