Internet users in Western Europe are paying more than double what those in
Asia pay for broadband.
According to researchers
Point
Topic, the average price of DSL broadband in Western Europe is around £25
per month, compared to just £10 per month in South East Asia, which includes
China, Hong Kong, India and Pakistan, among others.
South East Asia emerged as the cheapest place in the world for broadband but
we can take some solace in that they also have some of the slowest broadband
speeds, averaging 1.7Mbits/sec.
Western Europe and North America were on a par in pricing terms. For £25,
Western Europeans can expect an average download speed of 4.1Mbits/sec, which is
a little cheaper than in the US. Eastern Europe enjoys broadband almost 20 per
cent cheaper than Western Europe at £20 per month but users only get half of the
speed.
Latin and South America are the most expensive places in the world for
broadband, with an average cost of £33 per month, thanks to an underdeveloped
infrastructure and lack of competition. Not only that, but the downloads speeds
are also the slowest. Read more
