Wimax 'capable' router shown off

Needs future upgrade via a PC card slot to function

A router described as Wimax capable has been shown off at Infosec 2007.

German manufacturer Trust Eli claims it is the first router to allow secure access of cellular, Wifi and Wimax. It does this by having a PC card slot that will accommodate a Wimax card in the future.

Trust Eli says the slot can also be used for cellular access by using an HSDPA or 3G card, dial-up access or as an upgrade to draft-N Wifi.

Dubbed Eli Everywhere, it comes with integrated ADSL and cable modems in order to connect to the internet by more traditional means.

It also features 802.11b/g Wifi, a four port Ethernet switch, USB port for PC access and a USB host port so a printer can be attached.

The device was shown off at the security exhibition Infosec due to its onboard anti-virus software, firewall, spam control and content filtering.

It will go on sale this summer and Trust Eli claims to be in negotiations with one the UK's largest ISPs. However, pricing starts at $200 (approx £100) for the device, which could prove too high for ISPs to stomach.
