Intel launched the latest generation of its Centrino notebook platform today
in a low-key event at the heart of the City of London.
The new platform, codenamed Santa Rosa, comes in two flavours: Centrino Pro
for businesses and Centrino Duo for home use. They use the Intel Core 2 Duo
processor and 965 Express chipset with enhanced graphics that support links to
high-definition TV sets.
Wireless connectivity has been boosted to the draft 802.11n specification
giving a theoretical data rate of up to 350Mbit/sec – though real-life transfers
are like to be much slower.
Options include Intel Turbo Memory, high-speed non-volatile cache that can
speed up boot times by 20 percent and accelerate access to much-used
applications.
More than 230 Santa Rosa notebooks are expected to launch this year, and
there were
models
from HP, Lenovo, and Toshiba at the launch.
