BT rejoins the Post Office

Double irony in £750m broadband deal as 2,500 branch closures are announced

BT today announced a £750m deal to sell broadband through post offices – as the Government announced that 2,500 sub-branches are to close.

The coincidence was doubly ironic in that the two companies were once a single nationalised entity, and email has played a large part in the decline of the Post Office.

Closures over the next 18 months will still leave 11,900 post offices through which to sell integrated voice and broadband services. The Post Office already has 400,000 telephony subscribers.

Many other providers already resell bandwidth provided by BT Wholesale, but they provide their own management, value-added services and support.

The Post Office deal differs in that it essentially rebrands a complete package provided by BT Wholesale.

Paul Reynolds, chief executive at BT Wholesale, said: “It will help to quickly establish the Post Office as a key player in an exciting, dynamic and ultra competitive market for broadband-based services."
