Enterprise software giant SAP has admitted that one of its divisions made
‘inappropriate’ downloads from Oracle’s website but has denied that it accessed
its intellectual property.
The company was responding to a recent lawsuit launched by its rival Oracle,
accusing it of corporate theft and copyright infringement.
SAP division, Tomorrow Now, which provides maintenance for business software,
often accesses Oracle’s website for support materials, but overstepped the mark
on this occasion.
However, SAP has denied it had access to the Oracle data, thanks to firewalls
in place that prevent it from accessing Tomorrow Now’s systems.
“Even a single inappropriate download is unacceptable from my perspective. We
regret very much that this occurred," said Henning Kagermann, CEO, SAP AG. “I
want to reassure our investors, customers, partners and employees that SAP takes
any departure from the high standards we set for all of our businesses very
seriously, regardless of where it occurred or how confined it may be.
“When I learned what happened, I promptly took action to strengthen
operational oversight at Tomorrow Now while assuring that we maintain excellent
service for Tomorrow Now's customers going forward.”
SAP has said it is willing to settle the case with Oracle but the hearing in
a US district court will still go ahead in September.
